Year 2 Big Schools’ Birdwatch 2026

For this half term’s current affairs lesson, Year 2 took part in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch 2026. The children explored the school grounds to look for and identify different birds, counting groups of the same birds they could see.

The children learned that counting birds helps scientists understand which birds are increasing in number and which may need extra help. By sharing their results, Year 2 contributed to real national information used to protect birds and their habitats.
This activity helped the children practice their skills in data collection as well as engage in outdoor learning, while encouraging teamwork, careful observation and respect for the natural world.

The RSPB awarded Year 2 a certificate, signed by Sir David Attenborough, in recognition of their participation in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch 2026 and earned our school a ‘School For Nature 2025-26’ accolade!
